A private jet to Koh Samui is one of the most requested trips in Thailand, and Samui is one of the hardest airports to fly into at short notice. The airport is privately owned, slot-controlled and short on parking in high season, so a private flight to Samui depends on early planning. This page explains how Samui works for private aircraft, which aircraft can use it, and how a charter to Samui is arranged.

Flying privately into Koh Samui: what makes it different

Samui International Airport (IATA USM, ICAO VTSM) sits on the north-east of the island, a short drive from Chaweng, Bophut and the main villa areas. Unlike Phuket or Bangkok, it is not run by Airports of Thailand. It was built by Bangkok Airways and is still owned and operated by the airline, which shapes how private aircraft are accepted.

A privately owned, slot-controlled airport

Every private flight into Samui needs prior permission and an approved slot. Industry guides list Samui as a fully coordinated airport, and slot requests are submitted through the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT). Approval typically takes around five working days. The Thai landing permit is then applied for once the slot is confirmed, so the two steps run in sequence rather than side by side.

The planning window

We prefer a week’s notice before the departure date to ensure all permits and approvals are in hand. If you need to fly sooner, contact our charter team and we will check whether it is operationally viable at short notice. For Samui in particular, that week gives the slot request, landing permit and handling arrangements time to be confirmed before you travel.

Operating hours and parking in high season

The airport is open from roughly 06:00 to 22:00 local time, and private and general aviation movements are generally limited to 07:00 to 21:00. Out-of-hours movements are reserved for medical flights. Aircraft parking is the other constraint: space is usually available from April to September, but from October to March it should be requested well ahead. If your aircraft is staying on the island for several nights over Christmas, New Year or Chinese New Year, parking is one of the first things to confirm.

Which aircraft can land at Koh Samui

Samui’s runway comfortably handles business jets. For private flights, industry guides list a limit on weight rather than type: a maximum take-off weight of around 64 tonnes. In practice that means most business jets, from light jets to heavy jets, can be considered, subject to slot and parking approval. Some ultra-long-range jets and VIP airliners cannot operate here because of runway length and weight limits.

Turboprops and light jets for Bangkok and Phuket hops

The flight from Bangkok is about an hour, and from Phuket around 40 minutes. For these short sectors a turboprop or light jet is usually the efficient choice. Light jets typically seat four to seven passengers with a range of around 3,500 km, which covers every domestic and regional route into Samui. Turboprops are well suited to short runways and island hops.

Midsize, super-midsize and heavy jets from further afield

Families and groups flying in from Hong Kong, Singapore or further afield often choose a midsize jet (six to nine passengers, around 5,500 km range) for the extra cabin space and luggage room on a longer sector. A super-midsize or heavy jet makes sense when the trip begins outside Asia or continues to Japan, Australia or the Middle East without a stop.

Larger groups and the Surat Thani option

If that limit applies to your flight, it puts the largest VIP airliners, such as Boeing Business Jet and Airbus ACJ variants, outside what Samui accepts. For a wedding party or corporate group that needs an airliner, the usual solution is to fly into Surat Thani (URT) on the mainland and continue by road and car ferry, or to split the group across two business jets flying direct to Samui. Both options can be quoted with timings so you can compare them.

Private jet Koh Samui routes and flight times

Route Approx. distance Approx. flight time Suggested aircraft
Bangkok (DMK / BKK) – Koh Samui 470–490 km About 1 hr Turboprop, light jet
Phuket (HKT) – Koh Samui 250 km About 45 min Turboprop, light jet
Singapore (XSP / SIN) – Koh Samui 1,000 km About 1 hr 45 min Light jet, midsize jet
Kuala Lumpur – Koh Samui 780 km About 1 hr 25 min Light jet
Hong Kong (HKG) – Koh Samui 2,050 km About 3 hrs Light jet, midsize jet

Distances are great-circle; flight times are planning estimates and vary with aircraft, winds and routing. Your quote confirms the exact timing.

Arriving at Samui: customs, handling and transfers

International arrivals clear customs, immigration and quarantine at the airport itself, so a flight from Singapore or Hong Kong can land directly on the island without a stop in Bangkok. Samui does not have a dedicated private aviation terminal of the kind found at Bangkok or Singapore, so the arrival is coordinated through the airport’s ground handling agent. Handling, customs and immigration and ground transport to your villa or resort are arranged in advance as part of the booking.

Why book your Koh Samui charter through ASA

ASA Air Charter has arranged private flights across Asia since 1999, with offices in Bangkok, Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta and Manila. The ASA Group and its subsidiaries act solely as air charter brokers and do not own, maintain, or operate any aircraft. That independence means we compare aircraft across many operators and propose the one that suits your route, group and dates, rather than the one we happen to own.

Before any aircraft is proposed, we check that the operator holds a valid Air Operator Certificate and that its insurance covers the specific mission, along with any foreign operator permits the route requires. You can read the full process on how ASA selects operators. For Samui, ASA arranges the slot request, landing permit, parking and handling for your flight.
